Training Your Cat to Adore the Brushing Process

Grooming your cat shouldn't be that hard of a routine to get into because cats love to be petted. Grooming your cat will eliminate loose hair and prevent health problems due to fur balls. Your cat could be bothered by briars and other sharp objects his fur collected, and brushing your cat gets rid of these. Through grooming your cat at regular intervals, you can keep an eye on your cat's overall health. When your kitty wants to curl up on your lap and sleep it's a good time to brush him. So that you don't disturb him by fetching it, have the brush close to you. If you haven't used the brush on him before, you can rub your hands on the brush, and then hold it close to his face so that he can smell your scent on it. This will re-assure him that it is not threatening, and won't hurt him. Once your cat has gotten comfortable with the brush, use gentle movements to brush your cat slowly. Make sure you brush in the direction of where the hair falls. If your feline grabs the fur brush, stop brushing him. This encourages your cat to stay still for future grooming sessions. After your cat has calmed down, begin the brushing. Work backwards, starting at ear level with a drawn out movement. Be careful not to brush near his face, since his eyes and whiskers could get injured. If your cat's hair is matted, be very careful untangling the fur because it can hurt him. If your cat assumes the grooming session will be painful, he won't be as cooperative next time. Several different brushes can be useful when grooming your pet. A large brush with stiff bristles is good for the body, while a smaller, softer brush can be easier to manage the belly and tail. If your cat has long tail hairs, you may need a brush with bristles that are a little stiffer then the smaller brush has. A comb can also be a handy part of your cat grooming toolbox.
